World Soccer Update

Okay soccer fans, time for a little World Soccer update.

I know everyone is now locked into the NFL season, trying to figure out if and when Aaron Rodgers will return to play QB for the Packers and can they somehow earn a playoff spot.  College basketball is in full swing.  Duke is #1, shocking, but they just lost….excellent.  The UK Wildcats, my alma mater, are in the top 10 while starting 5 freshman.  Crazy.

But…did you know there was another significant sporting event this weekend.

MLS CUP.

How many of you knew that.  Not many I would guess.  MLS Cup is not yet required viewing for the sports fan in the US.  MLS has had a record year of attendance, but still has a way to go before sports fans make this an event they schedule around and throw watch parties.  Regardless, lets take a look so you can outsmart all your soccer friends with your amazing soccer knowledge.

TORONTO FC 2 SEATTLE SOUNDERS 0

For the first time ever, a Canadian club has won the MLS Cup.  Lets look at some highlights.  In a game dominated by Toronto FC but scoreless until the 66th minute.  Jozy Altadore, of USMNT fame, scored the first goal and a late extra minute goal (94th minute) ended the game at 2-0.  Toronto earned the most points in MLS history and was a deserving Champion.

Premier League Match Week 16

Manchester City continues its domination of the Premier League this week, setting a new Premier League record with 14 consecutive victories.  That is a really amazing stat, 14 in a row in the toughest league in professional soccer.  Most experts agree, the title is likely over, Man City has an 11 point lead and the season is not quite half complete.  They are on a record pace to earn the most points ever in a Premier league Season.

Manchester City   46  (out of a possible 48.  15 wins and a draw)

Manchester United   35

Chelsea   32

Liverpool   30

Game of the Week.  Manchester City 2 Manchester United 1

Controversy of the Week.  Liverpool 1 Everton 1.  Was it a penalty?  You decide…around the 2:20 mark.  But don’t fast forward or you will miss the goal of the week by Mohammed Salah.

Man these guys are good!
