English Premier League: Weekly Update December 30th

It Christmas season and one of the gifts we receive is Premier League football.  The holiday season brings us games, games, and more games.  Weekend games and midweek games mean we have soccer opportunities all over the television.  I hope you are checking it out and hopefully have some vacation time, sitting by the fire, watching the weather channel show we are going to be below zero all week and deciding….what a great day to relax and watch a soccer game.

It’s Saturday and we are working our way thru Matchday 21.  What are the story lines to keep up with?

Manchester City. Still has not lost a game this season.  It is really pretty amazing in a league as competitive as the Premier League that they have a current record of 19 wins and 1 draw.  Incredible.  A few fortunate games where they scored late to earn a win or a draw.  With all the games being played and the extra tournament games in the Carabao EFL Cup, FA Cup and Champions League…now is the time to nick a game from them….we’ll see.  They just keep rolling along.

Relegation Zone is heating up.  Teams in the bottom three and making moves to jump start their campaign and find a way to get out of the bottom three and maintain their position in the Premier League. Swansea City fired their coach last week as they have been floundering at the bottom all season.  They replaced Paul Clement after less than a year with new head man Carlos Carvalhal.  Why do team make these mid-season changes.  Seems crazy to us in the states, but the pressure to stay in the Premier League is incredible.  Does it work….well the first week proved positive.  Swansea City just beat Watford 2-1 today to move from 13 points to 16 points and from the 20th position up 1 spot to 19, but more importantly, just two points from safety.  They will be challenged all year to stay in the league but the first week with the new coach was big. Bournemouth moved from 19th to 13th with a big win today over 9th place Everton.  The 3 points vaulted them 6 spots. Currently 6 teams are within 3 points of the 18th position.  It is going to be a crazy battle to finish 17th or higher and stay in the league.   Two big wins today for teams in the bottom three

Battle for Champions League is holding Steady. The top 4 is unchanged in the past few weeks.  Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all holding down their positions and creating a little distance on the next four. Tottenham and Arsenal both have a chance to close within 1 point of Liverpool and the 4th spot later this weekend.

Current Table

We are halfway thru Week 21.  Here is where we stand.

Manchester City  19-1-0  58 Points.  Still on record pace.

Chelsea  14-3-4  45 Points.

Manchester United  13-4-3  43 Points.  Play later today.

Liverpool  11-8-2  41 Points.

Full Table.

On to some Highlights.

Liverpool v Swansea.  Some great goals in a blowout over Swansea.  This is the game that forced Swansea to make a coaching change.

Harry Kane Hat Trick.

This week marked a record for Premier League soccer.  Harry Kane now holds the record for most goals in a calendar year. (Premier League season runs over into the new year). He scored his 39th goal of the year this week .  What makes it even more amazing is that it was a hat trick (3 goals) after scoring a hat trick last week as well.  Back to Back.  Crazy Good! He surpasses legend Alan Shearer who scored 36 goals back in 1995 when he was leading Blackburn Rovers to the title.  As another sign of how difficult the Premier League is….Blackburn Rovers, who won the title in 1995, are now in the English League 1, two levels down from the Premier League.  From the pinnacle of English soccer to the third level.  Man this league is hard.

Lots of matches this weekend still to catch as well as more mid-week games.  A busy soccer season.  Check it out!

It’s Official; I am a Soccer Geek

We all have that moment of clarity, that instant we realize the truth.  It hits us in the face.  It is unavoidable.  I had one of those moments this weekend.  I am a Soccer Geek.  So there are lots of ways to spend your weekend as you approach the holiday season.  Shopping trips are an obvious choice.  Catching a viewing of “It’s A Wonderful Life” is a holiday favorite.  Fireplaces and hot chocolate and relaxing.  So…it was on a Saturday a few days before Christmas that I found myself hanging out with a bunch of other soccer fans at the Burnsville Blast indoor soccer facility watching a bunch of men’s teams compete in a 7 v 7 tournament.  Not on your bucket list I would guess.  But here is the thing….it was fun.  It was exciting.  It was a little bit crazy as well.

Eau Claire Soccer Community

Every community has some characters in it and the local soccer community is no exception.  If we are going to continue to grow the sport and fans of the sport, we need some crazy soccer fans to help it grow.  I have come across a few in my day and want to introduce you to one many of you may know, David Ripplinger. If you have been involved in soccer in Eau Claire for the past 10 years , likely you have bumped into Dave.  From player, to coach, to referee, to training camps, Dave does a little bit of everything related to soccer in Eau Claire.  He has coached my kids and probably yours in Eau Claire United.  He refs Indoor League and Tournaments at the Sports Center.  He has been part of Blugold Camps for years.  He is everywhere.  Even during the holidays I can’t get rid of him!  He contacted Austin about joining a team he was forming for a weekend tournament in Burnsville.  An Adult Mens 7 v 7 Tournament.

The Craziest Soccer Ever

I have watched some interesting soccer in my day.  I have watched some competitive soccer as well in my day.  But…I must say…this might have been the most interesting and craziest soccer I have ever been a part of.  16 Teams and it felt like a World Cup atmosphere.  It was awesome.  Minneapolis is a diverse community and has a strong soccer history.  This was the most ethnically diverse group of teams in a 16 team format in any tournament I had experienced.  Influences of Central and South America, Mexico and Africa were everywhere.  There were really good soccer players everywhere.  Other than going to an MLS game or watching Soccer on TV, this group represented some of the best quality players I have seen this close up. High School soccer is good, but the athleticism and skill of these players took it to another level.  Fast, athletic, strong, quick feet, aggressive and really fun to watch. Most of the players in their 20’s.  A few of these teams were part of the NPSL (National Premier Soccer League) considered the 4th level of soccer in the American Soccer system.  An amateur league made up of 96 teams from across the states.  A feeder system for players to launch into the other divisions of soccer as well as just a place for great soccer players not yet ready to give up the game a place to continue their soccer careers. Top Teams quality for the US Open Cup, the biggest open tournament in the United States. For you other soccer geeks here is the flow of US Soccer.

NPSL National Premier Soccer League along with the PDL Premier Development League: Level 3.  Amateur Soccer.

USL United Soccer League and NASL North American Soccer League: Level 2 with approx. 38 clubs between the two. Professional soccer teams with a regional flare.  Many of these teams have eventually made it to the MLS.

MLS Major League Soccer.  The top professional league in the US with 24 teams and expanding on a recent surge of popularity. Nashville was just admitted into the league as the newest expansion team.

Burnsville Tournament

Back to the tournament.  If I was to describe the action I would say it was a mix between Soccer-MMA Mixed Martial Arts-and Amateur Hockey. When you take games of 7 v 7 and put 14 really athletic (except our team…more on that later) players on a field the size of the Sports Center Field watch out.  Again…really good players…lots of testosterone….small field….walls…a little attitude….maybe a lot of attitude… and include a Trophy and a Winners Check and you get some interesting results.

I saw a ton of yellow cards. I saw a bunch of red cards. I saw a fight break out. I saw players tripped, knocked down, forced into walls. I saw great goals and incredible soccer skills. A little bit of everything. Add in the spice of the diversity of the teams and at times it felt like teams were playing for a World Cup trophy.  It was intense. The best team I saw was one of the NPSL teams, VSLT from the Saint Paul area. Pretty sure Minneapolis City FC had a team as well.  A bunch of ex and current UW Badger players made a team as well.  Really quality players were everywhere.  Back to Ripplinger.  He cobbled together a team of 12 made up of players all with some ties to the Eau Claire area.  Aaron Wagner and Frank Lowry with Memorial and Vitterbo connections.  Alex and Matt Glittenberg and Austin Lyons all with Memorial connections. Devin Bathke (Concordia), John Carli (Vitterbo) and Brian Crocker all with Chippewa Falls history.  Josh Albrecht from North (played in college as well).  Tyler and Norbert…sorry dudes..you both had mad skills but don’t know your back story.  In the midst of all these teams Ripplinger put together the Bad News Bears of soccer.  Most teams had cool uniforms and looked the part.  Ripp’s team all had yellow shirts, but 12 different yellow shirts.  Shorts all were different as well.  It made for quite a look.  As far as talent…pretty solid.  A bunch of college players and high school all conference players.  Maybe a few pounds heavier than their playing days. Maybe not quite as athletic looking as back in the day.  Pretty sure when the other teams saw them, they did not intimidate anyone.  But here’s the thing…they had talent, played together as a team and with Ripplinger flying around and scoring goals, they won their first three games to advance to the Quarterfinals.  The fairy tale ended as they ran into the VSLT team who was loaded with talent, skill and athleticism.  They were impressive and took down the Bad News Bears to end their day.  But I must say thank you to the team for giving us all a fun day and a very interesting soccer experience.  Lets take a look at some highlights of the day.

This will give a little flavor of the intensity.  This was mild compared to some of the action.  Ripplinger was one of the older players at 28, but mad respect for his skills, effort and attitude.  The dude still brings it!  Scored some nice goals. A typical striker who you love to have on your team but hate to play against.  Found out he did not have a chance to play high school soccer (Fall Creek) but did play for North Coach Terry Albrecht for EC United. Speaking of Terry, had a chance to chat with him a bit as well as he was there to watch Josh.  Loved talking to him and you can feel his passion for the game and his teams.  Hope to be able to spend more time discussing his soccer history in Eau Claire and write some posts on his North girls team this spring.

Here is a little game action to give you a feel for the early games.

A winning goal.  Pesky Ripplinger finds a way.

A small sample of the quality of the team that knocked them out. Man…what a rip from distance.   I know they make all that look easy, but trust me, not as simple as they make it look. Nice uniforms too!

And a final tribute to Ripplinger’s Team.

Thanks for a fun day!

English Premier League: Weekly Update

Okay Soccer Fans…..lets get caught up on the week of soccer in the English Premier League.  Week 18 was just completed so we are almost at the half way point of the season.  Things at the top are not changing much as the current Top 4 are:

League Standings

Manchester City  17-1-0  52 Points.  18 games without a loss and only 1 draw.  52 of 54 points.  On pace to set a record for points.

Manchester United  13-2-3  41 Points.

Chelsea   12-2-4  38 Points.

Liverpool   9-7-2  34 Points.

Top 4 is a big deal.  If you don’t win but finish in the Top 4 you qualify for the UEFA Champions League.  Champions League is big money.  Teams stuff their pockets with cash when they play in Champions League.  Top players want to play and win Champions League to fill out their resumes and earn big money contracts.

The bottom 3 is a title race all unto itself.  You DO NOT want to finish in the bottom 3 and get relegated down to the Championship Division.  Lost revenue, lost sponsor money, lost TV money, Club revenues drop significantly and players tend to jump ship.  Teams really fight much harder to stay out of the relegation zone than they do to win the League.  Coaches get fired, regularly, if a team is in the relegation zone.  Its happened a few times this year already!

Here is the race for the bottom 4.

Stoke City   4-4-10  16 Points.

Newcastle United   4-3-11   15 Points.

West Bromich Albion   2-8-8   14 Points.

Swansea City  3-3-12   12 Points.

So you can see…the race to stay out of the bottom 3 is much tighter than the race to win the league.  I am telling you…these games for these 4 teams are much more tense than you can imagine.  The pressure to win, to earn just a tie and 1 point is epic.  When they play each other, it is like a serious playoff game.

Here is the full table of results for all 20 teams.

Week 18 Results

Chelsea 1 Southampton 0

Crystal Palace 3 Leicester City 0

Huddersfield Township 4  Watford 1

Brighton 0  Burnley 0

Arsenal 1  Newcastle United 0

West Ham United 3  Stoke City 0

Manchester City 4  Tottenham Hotspur 1

Manchester United 2  West Bromich Albion 1

Liverpool 4  Bournemouth 0

Everton 3  Swansea City 1

Lets get to some Highlights

Game of the Week:  Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur.  This should have been a great game.  #1 vs. #7.  Big players for both teams.  Could Tottenham put some pressure on Man City and record their first loss of the season.  Well….a big No to that one.  Manchester City continued their unbeaten romp thru the Premier League and destroyed Tottenham.  It could have been much worse than 4-1…they left a few goals out there…although I am not sure how the first Raheem Sterling goal was not offsides.

Goal of the Week: Marcos Alonso from Chelsea vs. Southampton.  Of course I picked a Chelsea player….but hey…its my blog!  So for the novice soccer fan, take a close look here.  See how Chelsea sets up two players to potentially take the kick.  A right footed player and a left footed player.  Southampton sets up their wall and once Chelsea sees the wall is more set up to defend a right footed kick from Willian, they switch off and have Marcos Alonso take the kick.  He actually bends the kick around the wall…not over the wall.  The keeper is set up further right to defend Willian and he gets surprised by the Alonso kick.  Still…what a free kick.  Amazing.

Ted Lasso Strikes Again.  If you follow the blog you will remember a video I posted featuring Ted Lasso, an American football coach taking over Tottenham Hotspur.  Here is the second video in the series.  More fun stuff that I think you will enjoy.

Working on some Indoor League ideas..Stay Tuned.

UEFA Champions League Draw

The Round of 16 is now official.  The draw was completed on Monday and the games and dates are set.  Let’s take a look.

Next Round.

Juventus (ITA) v Tottenham (ENG)

Basel (SUI) v Manchester City (ENG)

Porto (POR) v Liverpool (ENG)

Sevilla (ESP) v Manchester United (ENG)

Real Madrid (ESP) v Paris Saint Germain (FRA)

Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) v Roma (ITA)

Chelsea (ENG) v Barcelona (ESP)

Bayern Munich (GER) v Besiktas (TUR)

Game Schedules

The next round of games are set up as Home and Away games with the winner advancing based on combined goals.  One tricky rule is away goals count more.  If you end up in a tie on the goals after both games the first tie breaker is away goals.  Example: Team A goes on the road and loses 2-1 to Team B..  They score one goal in their away match.  Team A wins at Home 1-0.  The cumulative score after the two matches is 2-2.  So who advances.  Ahah! Away Goals!  Team A would advance based on scoring 1 away goal while Team B did not score an away goal.   Getting an away goal becomes a huge deal.  Winning is key but you better keep the other team from scoring a goal in your house! If away goals are equal, teams go to extra time and then go to Penalty Kicks.  I am telling you….this is fun stuff. First leg games are February 13-21 and the second leg games are March 6-14.

Top Match Ups

So what about these match ups.  I am really looking forward to a bunch of these match ups.  Three of these really stand out.

Juventus v Tottenham.  Italy’s best team versus one of the best emerging English clubs.  You need to keep an eye on Harry Kane., considered one of the best young forwards in soccer.  Dele Alli is a star in the making, really good in the air. Christian Erikson is the best assist man is the English Premier league.  Juventus is full of stars: Juan Cuadrado, Alex Sandro, Higuain, Paulo Dybala, Douglas Costa, and one of the top GK in soccer Gigi Buffon.

Chelsea v Barcelona. My favorite team versus Spain’s powerhouse.  Wow.  Messi…that’s all you really need to know.  One interesting note, Messi has never scored against Chelsea.  You think he will be pumped up to end that record.  Yea..me too!  Barcelona’s roster is a who’s who of the best soccer players in the world.  Messi, Dembele, Paulinho, Suarez, Pique, Iniestsa.  You know you are good when you only need one name and everyone knows who you are!  Chelsea are no slouches.  Eden Hazard, Willian, Pedro, Morata, the best midfielder in the world Kante, and one of the most creative passers in the world Cesc Fabregas.

Real Madrid v Paris Saint Germain.  This is the marquee match up of the round. Must see TV.  The best player in the world Christiano Ronaldo.  You need to watch just to see him play.  And for PSG, Ronaldo’s heir apparent Neymar.  Wow.  Plus, maybe the best young player in the world, Kylian Mbappe.  The rosters are both full of stars.  This will be an exciting, high scoring affair.

Betting Odds

PSG 7:2

Real Madrid 9:2

Manchester City  7:1

To get you ready.  How about some highlights from the reining best player in the World.  Christian Ronaldo.

World Soccer Update

Okay soccer fans, time for a little World Soccer update.

I know everyone is now locked into the NFL season, trying to figure out if and when Aaron Rodgers will return to play QB for the Packers and can they somehow earn a playoff spot.  College basketball is in full swing.  Duke is #1, shocking, but they just lost….excellent.  The UK Wildcats, my alma mater, are in the top 10 while starting 5 freshman.  Crazy.

But…did you know there was another significant sporting event this weekend.

MLS CUP.

How many of you knew that.  Not many I would guess.  MLS Cup is not yet required viewing for the sports fan in the US.  MLS has had a record year of attendance, but still has a way to go before sports fans make this an event they schedule around and throw watch parties.  Regardless, lets take a look so you can outsmart all your soccer friends with your amazing soccer knowledge.

TORONTO FC 2 SEATTLE SOUNDERS 0

For the first time ever, a Canadian club has won the MLS Cup.  Lets look at some highlights.  In a game dominated by Toronto FC but scoreless until the 66th minute.  Jozy Altadore, of USMNT fame, scored the first goal and a late extra minute goal (94th minute) ended the game at 2-0.  Toronto earned the most points in MLS history and was a deserving Champion.

Premier League Match Week 16

Manchester City continues its domination of the Premier League this week, setting a new Premier League record with 14 consecutive victories.  That is a really amazing stat, 14 in a row in the toughest league in professional soccer.  Most experts agree, the title is likely over, Man City has an 11 point lead and the season is not quite half complete.  They are on a record pace to earn the most points ever in a Premier league Season.

Manchester City   46  (out of a possible 48.  15 wins and a draw)

Manchester United   35

Chelsea   32

Liverpool   30

Here is the full table.

Game of the Week.  Manchester City 2 Manchester United 1

Controversy of the Week.  Liverpool 1 Everton 1.  Was it a penalty?  You decide…around the 2:20 mark.  But don’t fast forward or you will miss the goal of the week by Mohammed Salah.

Man these guys are good!

Next Round Draw. Monday, December 11th is the draw for the Round of 16.  It is pretty complicated as it is not a straight draw.  They try to avoid teams playing against teams from their own league.  So…Chelsea can’t play the other 4 teams from the English Premier League.  Here is the deal…all the teams remaining are good, so the goal is to try to avoid Real Madrid, the current top team in UEFA.

Fun Facts.  This is the first time ever that 5 teams from the English Premier League have made it to the Round of 16.

English Premier League: The Best Soccer in the World

Okay soccer fans in Eau Claire, it’s time to talk English Premier League.  We have been discussing how to make Eau Claire a soccer community and one of the signals will be when the viewership of the English Premier League games on NBC and the NBC Sports Network improve.  If you happen to be at a sports bar and listen to the conversations likely you will hear talk about the Packers, Vikings and Badgers.  Lots of NFL talk, lots of College Football talk, but probably not much about the weekend of games in the English Premier League or the MLS.

It also amazes me when I talk to people in the soccer community; players, coaches, parents of players, etc. who really don’t have a clue about the English Premier League ( EPL), the top teams, the top games and the top storylines from the league. Soccer players are the ones that really make me wonder.  All of my kids are fans and two of them played soccer at a high level.  They were always aware and watched the games, knew the players, and followed the results.  EPL is now a part of their daily ritual.  I do believe that players who love the game can benefit from watching the best players in the world and the best teams in the world.  I also believe as a coach, it is a huge benefit to follow the game, watch the game and continue to study the game.

So do we have a chance to become a soccer nation…maybe.  Just this weekend I was watching a game that had a bit of controversy.  A foul in the box that seemed pretty obvious, but the Referee chose to not call a foul and instead booked the player for diving, a simulation foul, and gave him a yellow card.  It was quite controversial with lots of opinions by the experts on the call.  I happened to mention the call to Kathy (better half) and we had a lengthy discussion about it. A replay was on the TV and I showed her and more discussion continued.  It was an obvious foul in her mind, clearly the player was tripped and crazy the ref did not make the call.  Now…not sure I could have had that conversation with Kathy 10 years ago.  Likely the discussion might have been…What is diving, What is a PK, What is simulation?  She has been a soccer fan since the boys started playing and has watched a lot of games on TV as we followed Chelsea and watched a lot of their games.  She gets it now, knows the game and understands it as good or maybe even better than she knows football or basketball.  She is a fan.  If Kathy and I can have a 10 minute conversation about diving in a game between Bournemouth and Southampton on a Sunday morning, then I know there is hope in the US for Soccer.  Just sayin! Let’s give you a little background for the water cooler talk tomorrow.  Before we discuss the Premier League let’s review the English system.

English Soccer System

The English Football system is a bit different from sports as we know them in the US.  Here, we have professional sports made up of leagues; NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, etc.  That’s it really.  In baseball and hockey, there are Minor leagues and Independent leagues affiliated with the top league but teams in these lower leagues can’t ever become part of the NHL or MLB.  Their players can work their way up to the top league, but teams can’t.  For the NBA and NFL, all their really is below the top league is College sports.  College players are drafted into the league, but college teams can’t get into the NFL.  English Soccer is different!  Really different!  Their system consists of a pyramid of leagues, bound together by the principle of promotion and relegation.  A certain number of the most successful clubs in each league (usually the top 3) can rise to a higher league, while those that finish at the bottom of their league (usually the bottom 3) can find themselves sinking down a level. In theory it is possible for a lowly local professional club to rise to the pinnacle of the English game and become champions of the EPL. While this may be unlikely in practice, there certainly is significant movement within the pyramid of teams with teams moving up or down a level every year.

The top five levels contain one division each and are nationwide in scope.  Five levels of professional Soccer.  Crazy, imagine 5 levels of professional football.  Imagine if, by some crazy string of events, the Packers finished last in the NFC Conference, and the team was Relegated, moved out of the NFL, and dropped down to the professional level below the NFL.  This year the Cleveland Browns have not won a game.  Imagine if we had a system like English Soccer.  The Browns would be out of the NFL next year.  A team that had won the league below the NFL would get promoted and replace the Browns.  That might change how teams draft players.  That might change teams from late season tanking so they can secure the top draft pick.  Come in last and you’re out! Replaced!  You have to win the league you drop down to in order to get promoted back up to the NFL.  What a concept!  That might create a little stress when two 1-14 teams play the last game of the year and the winner gets kicked out of the NFL.  This happens every year in the English Soccer System.  Some of the most exciting games are the late season Relegation games that determine if you stay in the EPL.

At the top of English soccer is the single division of the English Premier League (Level 1, which is often referred to as the “top flight”), containing 20 clubs.  Below the Premier League is the English Football League (EFL), which is divided into three divisions of 24 clubs each: The Championship (Level 2), League One (Level 3) and League Two (Level 4). The 92 clubs in the Premier League and English Football League are all full-time professional clubs. There are still another three levels below this top group of 92 teams. So does this Relegation and Promotion create any really cool success stories. YES.  Example #1: Leicester City.  A long time professional soccer club founded in 1884, they played at the top-level of English soccer for years.  A string of bad managers, bad teams and debt lead the team to being relegated to the Championship (Level 2) and then down to the League 1 (Level 3) in 2008.  From there they fought their way back.  By 2014 they had worked their way back up from Level 3 to Level 1, the EPL.  Two years later, in one of the most miraculous seasons in the history of the EPL, Leicester City won the EPL Title.  So yes, it can happen!

2017-2018 English Premier League Season

So, quick review.  20 teams in the league.  The season is made up of 38 games.  Pretty simple concept.  You play every team twice, one home game and one away game.  The system is a pretty good way to determine the best team.  No Super Bowl, no playoffs, just earn the most points from 38 games and you are Champions.

Point system…again, pretty simple.  3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss.  I know, American sports fans are now screaming!  You get points for a tie!  Ties are for sissies, a tie is like kissing your brother or sister, ties suck!  Okay, okay, I get it, just sharing the system with you.  For the traditional American sports fan who wants the champion determined on the field…well, we have the UEFA Champions League for you.  Get off my back and just refer to my earlier post on the UEFA Champions League. I think you’ll like this League a lot!

UEFA Champions League

We are now 2 months into the season.  Here is where things stand as of games this weekend.

http://www.espn.com/soccer/table/_/league/eng.1?src=com

The top 5 teams after 15 games are: Manchester City (43), Manchester United (35), Chelsea (32), Liverpool (29) and Arsenal (28).  Likely this years winner will come from the top 3 and based on the current points gap, Manchester City is going to be very hard to catch this year.  As of 15 games, Manchester City has earned the most points in the history of the EPL.  Out of a possible 45 points (15 games x 3 points for a win) they have secured 43.  14 wins and 1 draw.  Amazing.  It will take a significant run of bad luck, injuries or a complete collapse for them not to win the league.  But hey…anything is possible…see Leicester City example a paragraph earlier!!

English Premier Highlights

So now that I have risked boring the heck out of you with all that…maybe not the best idea for a blogger trying to increase his audience, but I thought we all needed to smarten up a bit.  Let’s take a look at some highlights for this season.

Another one.  It is worth the 5 minutes.  These players and goals are really good!

Top Games of the Year Highlights.  Manchester United wins 3-1 vs. Arsenal.  Lots of talk in American sports about the lack of goals…games are boring…no excitement.  Well, check out these highlights for a 3-1 game.  Really good stuff.

Had to include a Chelsea game highlight.  Chelsea vs. Tottenham.  Really exciting stuff.

So…now you are caught up.  Quick review.  You know all about the English football system.  You are an expert on Relegation and Promotion.  You know the Premier League is the best league in the world.  You are all caught up on the season so far.  Manchester City is on a historic run and historic point total.  But as we know from the Leicester City example…anything is possible. Come on Chelsea!

More updates to follow as the season continues to progress.  Your personal challenge.  Watch a Premier league Game…do it soon!  You won’t regret it.  Better yet, watch the game with your son or daughter that play soccer.  If they love soccer, they will love it! Every Saturday or Sunday morning you have options.  NBS Sports Network (Charter channel 662) or NBC (Charter channel 605) are the best options.

Memorial Season Review: Volume 3

So, let’s see, it has now been 4 weeks since the last Memorial game.  I am feeling a little better now.  I have had the chance to talk to a few friends about the game and have shared the game flow with a few soccer friends.  I can discuss it now without as much frustration but it still does amaze me how Arrowhead scored 4 goals.  A weird game for sure.  I am still convinced we were the better side and still filled with pride for a really high quality team who had a great season.

All-Conference/All-State Teams

So…let’s reflect on the season a bit more.  When you have a season like Memorial, you are bound to have some players recognized for their season during the year-end season awards.  Here is a review of the All-Conference Teams.  Memorial had 8 players recognized on the teams including 3 of the Top 4 players.  Rice Lake had 7 recognized and made a deep run into the Playoffs for Division 3, no surprise with that quality. A little surprised Hudson with only 5 after finishing second in conference.  But watch out for Hudson the next two years, they placed 3 Sophomores on the teams and the leading candidate for Player of the Year next year in Kolton Prater.

First Team

Memorial: Jack Longville (Player of the Year), Will Orser, Owen Jolley, Bryce Burlingame, Tyler Hanson (jr)  Hudson: Kolton Prater (so), Nick Thompson (so) Chippewa Falls: Jordan Faschingbauer, Cole Oliver Rice Lake: Brandon Hover  North: Braden Pick

Second Team

Memorial: Cooper Lyons, Matthew Martinez  Hudson: Thomas Laraia, Santi Vergara  Rice Lake: Logan Severson (jr), Karl Linton (jr), Jacob Tomesh  North: Logan Podolak (jr) River Falls: Karl Linton (jr), Connor Weinzirl (jr)  Menomonie: Nate Frank

Honorable Mention:

Memorial: Simon Larson Hudson: Cole Ober (so) Rice Lake: Ben Neufeld, Michael Birhle (jr), Seth Kurzynski  North: Lushi Xiong (so)  River Falls: Josh Linton (fr) Menomonie: Adam Wilson (jr)  Chippewa Falls: Lucas Connolly, Eric Otteveare (jr)

All-State Recognition:

Memorial: Jack Longville First Team, Own Jolley Honorable Mention, Will Orser Honorable Mention  Hudson: Kolton Prater Honorable Mention

Surprises: Memorial’s Luke Rosenberger and Jacob Peloquin did not get 2nd Team or Honorable Mention.  Thought they deserved it.  Might have been a victim of so many other Memorial players on the teams.

On a side note, Whitefish Bay who went undefeated and won State Division 2 and was ranked ion the Top 10 in the nation had 4 players named First Team All-State.  Wow–what a team!

A Look Ahead: 2018 Way Too Early Projections

Big Rivers. So I am going out on a limb here…I mean a huge reach here…I predict it will be a two-horse race next year between Hudson and Memorial for the Big Rivers Conference Crown.  Okay, even you would have predicted that.  They have won the majority of the Championships over the past 10 years and it feels like Chippewa Falls may be in the rebuilding mode for a few years. Rice Lake has a nice foundation with three juniors on the team but loses their strong GK and will need to find a replacement. North returns a strong Midfield, but where will North find scoring?  River Falls had 3 underclassmen selected and will try to build around them.  Menomonie continues to build their program in search of a competitive Big Rivers season. If you look at the All-Conference teams for some clues to the best team, Hudson returns 3 sophomores.  That is a pretty solid foundation to build from.  Memorial returns 2 Juniors who made the team, not bad, especially given their strong senior class.  I would give Hudson the slight edge, but really like the fact that Memorial has an All-Conference GK returning in net for 2018.  Tyler Hanson will be huge in keeping Memorial in the hunt next season.

Memorial: We Don’t Rebuild…We Reload

So, how do you replace Memorials’ Senior class….the Conference Player of the Year and All-State selection, 2 All-State HM players, and 6 players who made All-Conference Teams. Memorial loses 73% of their goals with the graduating Seniors.  Probably over 80% of their assists.  7 Senior Starters and more importantly, the leadership from 9 Seniors who were part of the program for 4 years.

That is a big task. Let’s discuss.  So what does the team look like next year.  Some early projections for the Starting XI.

Confident Choices. GK: Tyler Hanson, Center Back: Simon Larson, Left Winger: Luke Rosenberger, Forward: Jacob Peloquin

Pretty Confident Choices. Center Back: Logan Junker, Midfield: Alex Sulzer, Right Winger: Mitch Brenner

Good Chance but need to Continue to develop over the next year. Fullback: Dalton Christopherson, Midfield: Will Hayes

Last Two Starters are up for grabs with no obvious answers: Maybe Lucas Zumwalt at Right Winger and Brenner moves into Attacking Midfield spot?  Maybe Ryder Woodworth jumps into a starting role as a fullback?  Maybe Sulzer drops back into a Fullback spot and opens up a Midfield spot.  Maybe a sleeper or a surprise starter.  Other players in the mix for significant minutes or starter roles: Carlos Verduzco, Jacob Harmson, Jacob Hartkmeyer.

Still some interesting questions to be answered.  Which of the JV Players make the jump to Varsity and earn a spot starting or earn significant minutes?  Who will jump into the mix with a big year of growth and development: JV Captains Connor Stadnyk, Will Hartman, Evan Smith?   Will an incoming Freshman make Varsity?  It’s pretty wide open and every player on the team has an opportunity to take a spot and earn minutes. Likely they carry 18-20 on varsity and that means 5-7 players have a chance to earn their spot.  Work hard boys!  Plenty of talent, great scoring options, some versatile midfielders, some strong defenders, an All-Conference GK.  It’s all there, it will just be more of a process than last year when the entire team was returning. Go Abes!

Turkey Bowl: A Thanksgiving Tradition

If you have been a part of the Eau Claire Soccer community for the past 15 years then maybe you have had the good fortune to participate in a really fun event; The Turkey Bowl 3v3 Soccer Tournament.

The event has been held at the EC Indoor Sports Center for the past 15 years.  I think my kids have participated in at least 10-12 of these events.  I know because I still have drawers full of the T-Shirts.  I can’t seem to get rid of them, they keep showing up year after year when the boys are in need of a colorful shirt for some event, out pops a Turkey Bowl T-Shirt. Here is what I love about the tournament.

Minimal or No coaching. It is just kids playing soccer for the fun of the game.  Occasionally, a team has a coach, but usually, the coach is just there to manage substitutions.  At the older age groups, NO COACHES, which is perfect.  Just play the game for the love of the game.

A Fun Family Event. Much of the soccer year is stressful.  League play, tournaments, playoffs, win and advance or lose and go home.  Players feel some stress, coaches feel some stress and parents really feel some stress.  The Turkey Bowl is pretty stress free.  A chance for kids to enjoy the game.  They tend to experiment more, try some trick shots, fancy dribbles, crazy volley shots; things they would not normally do during their Club season or school season.  It is fun to watch.  There are always some great goals.  Parents seem relaxed and just enjoy watching their kids play.  I also love the opportunity for brothers and sisters to play together.  I have two boys who played soccer, but never on the same team, they are 4 years apart in school.  But…on Turkey Bowl Day, we have been able to have them on the same team.  To be able to watch them play together was a real treat. I watched a few High School Games yesterday and had the chance to see the Jolley brothers on the same team.  Really fun.  Owen joined a team of younger players which included his brother Will.  Very cool of Owen to join and really cool for mom and dad to watch them play together.

A Chance to Reconnect. Every year I attend, we end up reconnecting with friends and families we have not seen in a few years.  Austin joined a team of players he played High School soccer with and it was great to reconnect with kids and families.  Plus, what a treat to watch your kids play soccer again after 3-4 years away from High School.  A blast from the past to see the group of boys back on the field.  Plus, you end up reconnecting with the parents and other siblings you have not seen for years.  I love all the older siblings back for the holidays spending the afternoon watching their little brothers or sisters playing soccer. We bumped into many of the parents who you just don’t connect with often.  Soccer finding a way to bridge the gap and reconnect….how cool is that!

Good Soccer.  Last but certainly not least, there is some good soccer being played as well.  The Adult division featured some really high quality players.  A bunch of college players, ex-college players, All Conference players and members of our local Men’s leagues participated.  The High School boys featured a ton of quality players from Memorial and Chippewa Falls and I think one I recognized from Menomonie.  3 v 3 is fast and furious.  The game moves quick and the scoring is early and often.  I captured a few goals to give you a sense of the game play.  Here are some highlights:  A really good game between Chippewa Falls and Memorial.  With 3 v 3 there are two primary options.  A really solid 1 v 1 skill and shot or really good team play breaking down a defense and getting a 2 v 1 situation to score.  Here is one of each.

Really good skill on display by Chippewa Falls team. I think I see a nutmeg in there and then a powerful finish.

Really strong team play for Memorial and creating a simple 2 v 1 opportunity and finish.

In the Adult division, I have to share a couple of videos.  First, Alex G. wanted no part of Cha Cha (local soccer legend in EC) as he knows if you get hit by a blast from Cha Cha it hurts. He artfully stays away on the first blast…nice leg flip.  Also notice the skill on Cha Cha to slice it into the net. He hits that with the outside of his left foot.

Alex gets his revenge later.  Man, these guys generate a lot of power.  Most of the players in the older division had some bruises and scrapes.  Still competitive even after all these years.

This last video I had to add.  Probably the sweetest goal I saw all day.  A combination of power, speed and crazy skill.  A back heel, nutmeg goal from 10 yards. What!  Nicely done!  Sorry Adam….but it was a really nice goal.

Thanks EC Sports Center.  A great weekend and fun event.

UEFA Champions League

So how do we create a soccer culture in Eau Claire. Start with Rec leagues, then great Club soccer, develop outstanding high school teams, and provide an opportunity to experience college soccer.  It’s all here.  So what else do we need.  How about passionate Soccer Fans!  How about fans who are knowledgeable about the world soccer game.  With that, let’s talk about the biggest Club tournament in the world; UEFA Champions League.

To the casual soccer fan, the various Leagues and Tournaments can be a bit confusing.  We are conditioned in the US to understand sports thru the lens of how we operate.  NFL, NBA, MLB, even NHL all have similar scenarios.  One league, 32 teams, 4 divisions, 8-12 playoff teams, and a Championship game deemed to determine the best team in the World.  But, we are just one country.  How can we be sure the team that wins is the best in the world. We are also a bit cocky in the USA, and we figure we must be the best if we win the title.  But what if….what if there was an even bigger tournament….what if the best teams from leagues all over the world came together to play in a mega Championship.  Now we do have the Olympics, but that is National Teams and only once every 4 years.  We do have the World Cup in soccer, but again, National Teams and only once every  4 years.

So, in case you didn’t know, Soccer has a tournament just like the one described above.  A mega Championship that takes winners and top teams from various leagues throughout Europe and once a year, they play in the Champions League to determine the best team in Europe.  With European soccer being deemed the best in the world, by default, the UEFA Champions League crowns the professional Club team considered to be the best in the world.

So what are all those initials for?

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the administrative body for association football in Europe, although several member states are primarily or entirely located in Asia.  It is one of six continental confederations of world football’s governing body FIFA. UEFA consists of 55 national association members. These association members are countries and each country has soccer leagues. The basic premise is that the UEFA Champions league is a tournament that brings together the top teams form these various leagues to create a super tournament.

So now talk about crazy initials, FIFA has 6 governing bodies. The other five are:

Asian Football Conference (AFC) with 46 members.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) with 54 members.

Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) with 35 members including the United States.

Confederation of South American Football (CONMEBOL) with 10 members.  Still trying to figure out what the initials mean for this group.

Oceania Football confederation (OFC) with 11 members including New Zealand and Pacific Island countries.

So What About This Tournament?

The UEFA Champions League is an annual competition organized by UEFA and contested by top-division European Clubs. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club competition in European football, played by the League champions (and, for some nations, one or more runners-up) of the strongest UEFA national associations. The Champions League final is the most watched annual sporting event worldwide. The final of the 2012 tournament had the highest TV ratings of any event to date, drawing 360 million television viewers. Let’s compare that to the Super Bowl.  Widely considered the most watched sporting event in the United States and the biggest world wide event hosted by the United States.  So how many watch the Super Bowl.  It must be more than soccer, right, I mean, we are talking the Super Bowl.  Well, prepare to be humbled US Football.  The most watched Super Bowl ever had a world wide audience that was approx. 115 Million.  So, just take that in for a moment, the most watched US football game ever was still only 1/3 the viewers of the most watched soccer game ever.  30%.  That is pretty amazing.  So how many of you have watched a final of the Champions League, conversely, how many of you have watched a Super Bowl game.  I know the answer, it’s not even close.  Soccer still has a way to go in the US.

Introduced in 1992, the Champions League competition replaced the European Cup.  In it’s current format it consists of 32 teams.  Teams come from automatic qualifying by winning their League.  Leagues, based on their quality, may have up to 4 entrants into the tournament.  Other teams gain entrance thru qualifying rounds.  As example, The English Premier League, widely considered the highest quality league in soccer,  gets 4 entrants into the tournament. The German Bundesliga gets 3 teams into the tournament. The Spanish La Liga gets 3 entrants.  The Italian Serie A gets 3 entrants into the tournament. The 32 teams are drawn into eight groups of four teams and play each other in a double round robin format.  You play each team twice, home and away.  The eight group winners and eight runners-up proceed to the 16 team knockout phase, single elimination, that culminates with the final match in May each year.

Real Madrid is the most successful club in the competition’s history, having won the tournament 12 times, including its first five seasons. Spanish clubs have accumulated the highest number of victories (17 wins), followed by England and Italy (12 wins apiece). The competition has been won by 22 different clubs, 12 of which have won it more than once. The reigning champions are Real Madrid, who secured their twelfth title in the competition after defeating Juventus 4–1 in the 2017 Final. Thus, they became the first team in the UEFA Champions League era to successfully defend their title.  I am a Chelsea fan and have had two opportunities to watch Chelsea in the Champions League Finals.  The first was when I was just starting to become a big soccer fan. I became a Chelsea fan in 2006 while watching some English Premier League games with Austin.  So it was really cool to be a Chelsea fan as they made it to the finals in 2008.  An epic game that went to Penalty Kicks after a tie score and no goals in OT.  They were captained by John Terry, one of the best defenders in soccer history and a Chelsea legend.  Here is the shot to WIN the Champions League title in 2008.

Wow, that was the goal to WIN the most prestigeous soccer tournament for league teams in the world.  He slips….and the ball careens off the post.  He had the GK fooled, it was a easy tap in really.  Unbelievable.  You can just feel the pain and agony after the miss.  Manchester United would go on to win that game.  John Terry still talks about the disappointment of that moment.  Spring forward to 2012.  Chelsea is an underdog and really has no reason to be in the finals.  Multiple players are injured, they are starting a rag tag line up missing 3-4 of their regular starters.  No chance to win really against the best team in the world, Bayern Munich.

Another epic final.  Bayern scores late in regulation to take a 1-0 lead.  Chelsea, miraculously scores in the final minutes to tie it 1-1.  On to OT.  Arjen Robben gets fouled and has a PK in OT to take a lead, but it is stopped. It goes to PK’s. In a crazy turn of events, one of Bayern Munich’s legends Bastain Schweinsteiger, steps up to the line and incredibly, hits the post.  Sound familiar.  Next up another Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba can win it.  Here are the highlights of the game.

The 2017/2018 Edition is Under Way

This years edition is currently underway and approaching the end of the group play stage.  The teams are thru the first five games of the 6 game double round robin.  Most of the final 16 Group Stage is set with a few positions yet to be decided.  After the next wave of games, the Knock Out Round will be set.  In case you were wondering…I know you are….Chelsea is thru to the next round!  In the group stage, it is win and advance or lose and go home.

If you enjoy soccer or have kids playing soccer, please consider checking out the Champions League Tournament this year.  Games are being carried on Fox Sports.  It continues to amaze me how much high quality soccer is on TV and how few people who enjoy soccer or have kids playing soccer, that have never watched a Champions League game.  Especially surprised when I ask kids who play soccer, even at the high school level, who just don’t watch soccer on TV, even when it’s the best players and teams in the Champions League.  Again, we have a ways to go in the US.  Pretty sure high school football players watch the NFL and the Super Bowl.

Champions League.  Check it out.  The best soccer in the world!
